백시내는 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 금속공예가이다.
주로 칠보 기법을 사용하며, 그중에서도 유선칠보 작업을 중심으로 작품을 전개한다.
일상의 장면과 감정을 그림 그리듯 금속선으로 재료 위에 옮기고, 선과 색의 조합을 통해 이를 장신구와 오브제로 구현한다.
금속 위에 칠보와 선을 놓고 불을 통해 색이 완성되는 과정에서 손의 움직임과 축적된 시간, 그리고 불이 만들어내는 예측 불가능한 우연성은 작업의 중요한 요소가 된다.
그녀의 작업은 이러한 물질적 과정 속에서 드러나는 미묘한 흔적과 순간을 통해 일상의 감각을 조용히 담아낸다.
Sinae Baik is a metal craft artist based in Seoul.
She primarily works with enamel techniques, with a particular focus on cloisonné. By drawing with metal wires, she transfers scenes and emotions from everyday life onto metal surfaces, shaping them into jewelry and objects through the interplay of line and color.
In the process of laying lines on metal and completing color through fire, the movement of the hand, accumulated time, and the unpredictable contingencies created by heat become essential elements of her practice. Through these material processes, her work quietly holds subtle traces and moments, gently capturing the sensibilities of everyday life.
나의 작업은 전통적인 유선칠보 기법에서 출발하지만, 그 목적은 과거의 방식을 재현하는 데 있지 않다.
이 기법을 통해 동시대의 감각과 일상에서 비롯된 감정을 담아내고자 한다. 금속선을 구부려 형태를 만들고 그 안에 색을 채워가는 과정은, 나에게 금속으로 그림을 그리고 이야기를 쓰는 하나의 언어가 되었다.
유선칠보는 내가 마주한 풍경과 그 안에 스쳐 지나가는 사람들을 기록하는 방식이다.
쉽게 사라질 것 같은 감정과 잔상처럼 남는 기억들을 금속 위에 선으로 옮기고, 여러 겹의 유약을 통해 색과 온기를 더한다. 그렇게 완성된 작업은 단순한 장신구나 오브제를 넘어, 내가 일상을 바라보는 하나의 시선이자 이야기를 담는 그릇이 된다.
〈느리게 걷는 시선〉 시리즈는 우리가 무심코 지나치는 순간과 사물의 의미를 다시 바라보기 위해 시작되었다.
해외에 머물며 차 없이 생활하던 시간 동안, 걷는 일은 가장 자유로운 이동 수단이자 일상의 중심이 되었다. 필요에 의해 시작된 걷기는 점차 사유의 시간이 되었고, 마주한 풍경들은 배경이 아니라 나의 삶을 비추는 거울처럼 다가왔다. 가게 앞에 앉아 있는 강아지, 벤치에 잠시 머무는 사람의 모습은 나의 감정과 겹쳐지며 내면과 세계가 연결되는 순간을 만들어냈다.
걷는 속도가 느려질수록 시간도 함께 느려졌다.
시선은 사소한 장면에 머물렀고, 나는 일상을 어떻게 바라보고 있는지 스스로에게 질문하게 되었다. 그 과정에서 평범해 보이던 장면들 속에도 말해지지 않은 수많은 이야기가 존재한다는 것을 깨달았다. 한국으로 돌아와 다시 빠른 일상 속에 놓인 이후에도 나는 여전히 걷는다. 걷기는 단순한 이동이 아니라 세계와 감각적으로 연결되는 행위이며, 지금도 나의 작업을 이끄는 중요한 원천이다.
바쁘게 흘러가는 오늘의 일상은 종종 단조롭고 평면적으로 느껴지지만, 그 안에는 수많은 서사가 숨어 있다.
칠보 작업을 통해 스쳐 지나간 장면들을 다시 바라보고, 쉽게 놓쳐지는 순간의 가치를 드러내고자 한다. 작업 속 선은 길 위에 남은 시선과 발걸음을 닮았고, 그 위를 채운 색은 그곳을 흐르던 공기와 감정을 담고 있다.
전통 기법을 바탕으로 하지만, 내가 이야기하고자 하는 시간은 언제나 지금 이 순간이다.
나의 작업은 전통에 생명을 불어넣는 동시에, 일상의 감각을 공예의 언어로 옮기는 시도이다. 작은 순간을 기록하는 일은 단순한 재현이 아니라, 우리가 삶을 바라보는 방식을 다시 생각해보도록 건네는 조용한 제안이다. 이 작업들이 반복되는 일상 속에서 새로운 시선을 발견하는 계기가 되기를, 그리고 그러한 만남이 삶을 조금 더 풍요롭게 만들기를 바란다.
My work begins with the traditional technique of cloisonné, yet its purpose is not to reproduce methods of the past. Through this technique, I seek to hold contemporary sensibilities and emotions drawn from everyday life. The process of bending metal wires into form and filling them with color has become a language for me—one through which I draw with metal and write stories.
Cloisonné is my way of recording the landscapes I encounter and the people who pass through them. Emotions that seem fleeting and memories that linger like afterimages are traced as lines on metal, then layered with glazes that add color and warmth. The resulting works move beyond jewelry or objects; they become a way of seeing everyday life and vessels that carry stories.
The series Lingering Gaze began as an attempt to reconsider the meaning of moments and objects we often pass by without notice. During my time abroad, living without a car, walking became both the most liberating mode of movement and the center of my daily life. What started out of necessity gradually turned into a time for reflection. The landscapes I encountered were no longer mere backdrops but mirrors reflecting my own life. A dog resting in front of a shop or a person pausing on a bench overlapped with my emotions, creating moments where my inner self connected with the world.
As my pace of walking slowed, time seemed to slow with it. My gaze lingered on small, ordinary scenes, and I began to question how I was looking at everyday life. Through this process, I realized that even the most unassuming moments hold countless untold stories. After returning to Korea and reentering a fast-paced routine, I continue to walk. Walking is not simply a means of transportation; it is a sensory act that connects me to the world and remains a vital source of my practice.
Although daily life today often feels hurried, monotonous, and flat, it is filled with hidden narratives. Through cloisonné, I revisit fleeting encounters and seek to reveal the value of moments that are easily overlooked. The lines in my work resemble gazes and footsteps left on the road, while the colors that fill them hold the air and emotions that once flowed through those spaces.
While grounded in traditional techniques, the time I speak of is always the present. My work is an attempt to breathe life into tradition while translating the sensibilities of everyday life into the language of craft. Recording small moments is not merely an act of representation; it is a quiet invitation to reconsider how we look at life. I hope these works offer new perspectives within the repetition of daily life, and that such encounters may gently enrich our lives.
